Multi-day Tibet tours from Lhasa
The Lhasa tours page covers the palace and the city. A Tibet tour here means longer routes, from 8 to 15 days, that leave Lhasa for Gyantse, Shigatse, Everest Base Camp or the far west of the region. All of them run as organized trips with an accredited agency, a guide and a vehicle, which is how foreign visitors travel in Tibet. Tibet trips with a package tour or a group tour share one structure: the agency books hotels, vehicle and guide, and handles the permit where the includes say so.
Three packages are listed here. A 15 day group program leads to Mount Kailash. A 10 day program starts at the railway station in Shanghai and travels to Lhasa by train. An 8 day program runs through Lhasa, Gyantse, Shigatse and Everest. For Mount Kailash itself, this guide only notes that one of the packages leads there; ask the agency for the route details.

Our picks: multi-day Tibet tours
The small-group Kailash journey is the long route, the train tour from Shanghai starts outside Tibet, and the group tour through Gyantse and Shigatse stays on the classic route to Everest.

Multi-day routes beyond Lhasa, from Gyantse and Shigatse to Everest Base Camp, a Kailash program and a train route, with live prices and availability.
What packages include and what costs extra
The cards list the includes; these points help you read them.
The 15 day Kailash program lists private transportation, accommodation, an English-speaking Tibetan guide, entrances as in the itinerary and airport transfers. The Tibet Travel Permits are included, but the express fee for the permit and the visa for China are extra. Insurance, flights or trains to Lhasa and meals outside the itinerary are also not included.
The 8 day program through Gyantse, Shigatse and Everest lists a licensed vehicle with fuel and parking, liability insurance, a permit with express delivery, breakfast, airport and station transfers, 6 nights in 3 or 4 star hotels plus 1 night in a dorm bed at a guesthouse or in a nomad tent, emergency oxygen and a guide. The train program from Shanghai lists the permit application, hotels with breakfast, a guesthouse tent at the base camp, entrances and a soft sleeper train ticket from Shanghai to Lhasa with 4 people to a compartment. The return journey from Tibet is extra.
Everest Base Camp from Lhasa
Short version: the visitor area, the road and the dates.
Everest Base Camp on the Tibet side lies about 600 km from Lhasa, according to a 2020 figure from the city of Lhasa. The visitor area for tourists is not the same as the original climbers' camp, which is closed to tourists. After the earthquake in early 2025 the regional government reported the area as open again (report of 31 May 2025), which is not a promise for any single day. Roadworks matter now: on the G318 between Gyatso-La and Gangga, normal traffic is closed at night from 19:00 to 07:00 from 8 October to 30 November 2026. In daytime, from 07:00 to 19:00, vehicles pass with a construction-site limit of 10 km/h. Your agency plans the schedule around this. Mount Everest has a dedicated page on reaching the mountain from the Tibet side.
Tibet by train
The railway is a route, not a shortcut around the permit.
Train tickets to Lhasa require a personal booking with a valid passport. The permit still has to be arranged through an agency. Carry the documents from the agency in the original and clarify before boarding what is asked for on your train. The railway station, the airport and the airport bus are covered on the getting there page, and the permit steps are on the Tibet Travel Permit page.
The Nepal border crossing
One sentence, but it changes plans.
The German Foreign Office describes the border crossing at Gyirong, Xigazรช as not passable in both directions for an indefinite period (as of 31 October 2026), so plan a Tibet trip that returns through Lhasa or another Chinese city rather than a combined route with Nepal. For the palace and the city, see the Lhasa tours and the tickets page.
